Grenfell

It's the story of Grenfell Tower told as a chain of decisions, most of which didn't look like decisions at the time. A council block in one of Britain's richest boroughs gets a new skin of plastic-cored panels to make it look smarter. Residents who'd spent years warning that their landlord didn't take fire safety seriously get treated as a nuisance. Tests, certificates and guidance that should have stopped it all turn out to mean less than everyone assumed.

Then there's the night itself, the people inside, the firefighters on the single stair, the stay-put advice that held long after the building had stopped protecting anyone, and the long, messy years after: hotel rooms, a seven-year public inquiry, a police investigation and a tower now being taken down floor by floor. It's careful about what the inquiry found and what a court still has to decide, and it keeps the people of North Kensington at its centre.
