Fourteen Seconds

Prompt:

Craft a long work of fiction (4000-5000 words) presented as a fully functional MCQ quiz.

The quiz is ostensibly one part of an evaluative process for officers on a space station applying for the role of station commander. Questions should cover physics, engineering, space medicine, mission protocol, resource and people management plus any other relevant fields.

I would ideally like circa 15 questions, but you could generate more or fewer depending on the results of your initial feasibility check.

Include commentary/explanation after each selection. Prepare, for each question, two sets of explanatory notes; one presented on selection of the right answer and the other when a distractor is chosen. As you will not be keeping a record of the user's precise responses from one question to the next (though you will be keeping score), the two explanatory notes should move the narrative forward (if they do at all) in roughly the same way. This is not a "choose your own adventure" story.

Use distractors and explanatory notes as world-building and narrative tools.

The quiz is being administered by the station's administrative AI. Some questions (the question stem itself, distractors and commentary) may directly address the candidate, not as some generic "you" but as a character entangled in and perhaps implicated by the unfolding narrative.
